The design
The result is a highly integrated aesthetic and technical assembly. The design required the specification of high performance plastics to handle a maximum 230°C plate temperature and to carry the cosmetic finishes. A major challenge was housing the rectangular, high capacity lithium polymer battery. The solution was to stand the battery on edge so that it is shared between the two arms of the styler. Further innovations include locating the controls out of the way on the end of the product, and locking the arms together for portability and to minimise heat up time.
The challenge
Design a compact hair styler that could maintain a styling plate temperature of 210°C with a 1 hour standby battery life and 40 minutes continuous use. Additionally research showed that users wanted a fast heat up time for speed and convenience.
Transportable beauty
The mains powered hair styler and straightener market is catered for by a huge variety of products and brands. However there are very few truly portable products that women can use on-the-go to maintain their look. There are significant challenges to generating sufficient heat from a battery power source.
